Fremont, Washington was established by Edward Blewett and Luther H. Griffith. the two named the new community after their hometown in Nebraska. The Seattle suburb lies north of the metropolis. They created an 18-foot tall troll compete with a shiny metal eye beneath the bridge. In keeping with the folklore character’s ferocity, the creature is seen crushing a Volkswagen Beetle with his left hand. The creation has since become a popular destination for taking photographs along with individuals desiring to scale the statue.
Atop a building on the intersection of Evanston Ave. North and North 36th street stands a 53-foot tall rocket. The project began in 1991 when locals confiscated a 1950 cold war rocket fuselage from the surplus store. The structure also features the tail of a Fairchild C-119 transport. Rocket fins and a nose cone were added. The nose and each fin bear neon laser pods. When put in launch mode, steam vapor dramatically escapes from the base. The building on which it stands bears the motto “De Libertas Quirkas,” which is Latin for “Freedom to be Peculiar.”
At the intersection of Fremont Avenue North and North 34th Street stand six sculptures created by Richard Beyer in 1979. The display includes six people beneath a shelter and an unusual dog having a human face. The dog’s face was thought to be fashioned after one of the community’s earliest mayors. The popular sculptures are often decorated on special occasions.
Near the intersection of North 34th Street and Phinney Avenue North stands a unique topiary display. The exhibit features a mother and young Apatosaurus. The Pacific Science Center created the whimsical pair to promote their dinosaur exhibit.
Other outdoor art displays include “The Bug” on the telephone pole at the intersection of North 36th Street and Palatine Avenue North. Venturing along the Shipping Canal Plaza, guests see the rock stacks. The outdoor movie screen boasts the profiles of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Guests might also enjoy visiting the many galleries located throughout the community.
The facility promotes the cultural arts by regularly presenting live concerts, poetry readings and painting exhibits. Some of the performances include artists demonstrating their artistic skills live before an audience. Evenings of entertainment often feature multiple artistic genres performing on the same night.
The annual street fair remains one of the most popular festivals that regularly attracts up to 100,000 guests. The festivities span for an entire weekend during the middle of June. The fun-filled festival spans a three-day weekend in late September. More than 50 breweries attend the event and offer at least 100 beers, ciders and other beverages. Local bands provide continuous live entertainment. Guests also enjoy a large selection of traditional German food. Many participate in the friendly contests.
